Our four years at the State College at Bridgewater have been charac-
terized by change in the world, on our campus, and, above all, in
ourselves. We regret the passing of the small college — traditional
Bridgewater — but the physical and intellectual growth prompted by a
larger student body creates the exciting atmosphere in which we grad-

uate.

We, The Class of 1967, are a product of the traditions and the
innovations at Bridgewater. We have learned "not to be ministered
unto but to minister" as we have enjoyed the intellectual challenge
stimulated by a larger selection of major and minor fields of study and
a greater variety of electives within our chosen fields.

We have developed and will continue to develop intellectually just as
the college has expanded and will continue to expand physically. The
Conant Science Building and the new dormitories, the anticipated stu-
dent union and the new library building — all these are evidence of
physical growth which parallels our intellectual progress.

Memories of the old Bridgewater will always linger in our minds. No
longer will graduating seniors recall freshmen labs in the history de-
partment, lunches eaten in empty classrooms, or classes in the men's
and women's dorms. These belong only to the small classes.

We dedicate this yearbook to the last of the small classes at Bridge-
water State College — The Class of 1967.

Remember the years when
people went home during
Homecoming? Remember
the empty stands and the
general lack of spirit?
These are things of the
past! This year a new spirit
has emerged on the Bridge-
water campus. Kindled by
a winning football team,
fans filled the stands to
over-flowing to watch the
Bears down Maine Mari-
time 23 to 8 at the Home-
coming Game.

DRAMA CLUB

55

One of the most active and successful

clubs at BSC is the Drama Club, which

has contributed extensively during the

past year to the cultural development of

the rapidly expanding Bridgewater

campus.

Geared for the education and enjoyment

of its membership as well as the

audience, the Drama Club follows the

philosophy of learning by doing. The

productions throughout the year offer the

students opportunities to discover and

develop talents on-stage, off-stage, and

back-stage.

The 1966-1967 Assembly Committee, in
presenting its highly-selective and widely-
varied programs this year, chose for its
theme IMPACT, an appropriate word for
the time in which we live. The purpose of
the Assembly Committee is to bring to
the college programs which will . con-
tribute to the cultural growth of the stu-
dents.

To every thing turn . . . turn . . . turn.
There is a season and a time for every

A time to cherish . . . friendly faces

snow ... a hundred wreaths of pine
and berry . . .

Deck the halls with boughs of holly . . .

a gaudy gown of red and gold upon a pyramid

of pine . . . the ever-present song of silver

chimes . . . ice-blue shadows dancing on the snow . .

and then . . . from one light, many, and a pilgrimage

of lights that lace the campus in a glow of song.

An apple, a pear, a plum, a cherry,
any good thing to make us all merry
enormous platters of Christmas fare

The ancient songs of birth and hope
a thoughtful reverie of inner silence .
a childish lisp and an angelic vision .

. . . the infectious mirth of a mellow
Santa Claus . . . the noisy twang of electric
guitars ... a pounding ritual of sound . . .
youthful figures gyrating in fathoms of smokey
heat ... a frenzied joy that spills outside
onto the frozen stillness . . .

Under the guidance of new head
coach Tom Knudson, the 1966-
67 Bridgewater basketball team
provided its followers with some
good basketball, high-scoring
games, and most important,
some hard-earned victories. The
Bears put a young unit on the
floor, starting three juniors and
two freshmen. There were no
seniors on the squad.

Captains-elect Ron Broman
and Al Petipas, along with fresh-
men Barry Fitzgerald and Bar-
ney Ross, will be the nucleus of
next winter's team, which should
improve upon this year's showing
of 6 wins and 12 losses. Spirited
support by the growing legion of
Bear fans, especially in games
against Salem State, Boston
State, and Stonehill, give promise
for a better future at B.S.C. for
its fine athletic teams.

MODERN DANCE

Movements transformed to moods . . . expres-
sions of emotions through action and reaction
. . . creative patterns of motion inspired by the
rhythm and living pulsation of music of diverse
origins: The classical period, old musical scores,
modern broadway tunes, current movie themes,
even electronic music . . . from old to new. The
Modern Dance Club has provided the Bridge-
water campus with their special form of culture
which holds a respected position in the ever-
widening field of the performing arts. A positive
contributor to the campus community, the Mod-
ern Dance Club this year presented not only their
annual spring performance but also took part in
the Arts Festival weekend of activities.

AQUABRYTES

One of the highlights of the school year originating from the campus gymnasium is
the performance of the water show of synchronized swimming by the skilled and
talented members of the aquabrytes.

Working with the theme "Treasures of the Deep" the marine performers choreo-
graped and presented a variety of numbers which helped demonstrate their crea-
tivity and agility in the water.

The BSC mermaids set a precedent for their organization this year by adding
with great success three men — known as the Aquaknights — to their membership.

VISUAL

ARTS

FESTIVAL

Exposure to, and awareness of, some of the variety of forms
available in contemporary art should be considered as im-
portant in education as exposure to ideas and forms in sci-
entific or political thinking.

Lowenfeld and Brittain

Aware of this need for aesthetic exposure in the immedi-
ate and surrounding communities, the Visual Arts Club at
Bridgewater sponsored the second Festival of Arts to provide
entertainment and cultural enlightenment.' A spirit of in-
volvement penetrated the Festival, evidenced by the enthusi-
astic support of artists and viewers.

80

In the physical composition of the Festival, changes were
astounding. Contributions by the participating organizations
supplied an entertaining and educational program for all
during the four day festivities.

Creative interpretations by the Modern Dance Club, tal-
ented renditions by the State College-Community Orchestra,
and varied selections of the Glee Club's Spring concert, once
again drew appreciative audiences. As a special attraction
this year, the Drama Club skillfully presented two one-act
plays, while also supplying the Festival with wandering
Minstrels who told their stories in song, both old and new.
Other innovations were performances by the Aquabrytes, an
organ concert, and a Day Student Association concession
stand. Most impressive also was the increased number of
demonstrators who exhibited their handiwork.

Thus, the novelty, excitement, and satisfaction derived
from this second Festival of Arts has definitely broadened
our sensitivity to the techniques of contemporary art and
successfully assisted in communicating the values of the arts
as physical, emotional, and intellectual experiences.

The weather put a damper on many of the 1967 spring
athletic events, forcing cancellations and postpone-
ments throughout the season.

The track team, under the direction of Mr. Swenson

losing others in dual and tri-meets. The track team had
no senior members, was hurt by inexperience, and was
continually plagued by bad weather.

College graduates provide the key leadership in solving
the major problems of our time.

Among society's critical problems are issues of war and
peace, the ways and means of developing an equitable social order in
all respects — including a reasonable distribution of wealth and of
opportunities among the peoples of the nation and among the peoples of
the world.

We also need ways and means of coming to grips with the
explosions in human population, in knowledge, and in science and techno-
logy — as well as the concomitant problems of automaton and mass control
by the mass media.

College graduates above all should be very conscious of the
desire that everyone has to get simplistic — that is, misleadingly over-
simplified answers — to the overwhelming complexities we face. This is
a temptation we must all resist. Above all a good college education should
teach us to be suspicious of simple solutions to complex problems, and to
have the analytical ability and objectivity to recognize all the principal
pros and cons in the great issues of the day.

The second thing that every college graduate should be keenly
aware of is the price one pays — and should be willing to pay, in many
cases — for involvement and action instead of indifference and/or detach-
ment. On the one hand, detachment may be cold, impersonal and insensitive;
but, on the other hand, may be precipitate, ill-considered, and self-
defeating. The beginning of true wisdom, therefore, is to care about the
great issues; and not to fall into the trap of oversimplified solutions;
to be able to weigh the values of detachment versus action and appropriate
involvement in any given situation. All these things, to be sure, are
easier said than done but the educated person must try very hard to do so.

College graduates must develop these abilities and motivations
both as undergraduates and subsequently if they are to fulfill their role
as creative leaders of their kaleidoscopic world.
